What is Stress?
Stress is all around us. There are headlines everywhere to warn us about the danger of stress to our health and well being. We see the warnings in the daily news papers, TV and the internet. For all the hype and visibility we are never told what stress is or how to combat it effectively. They suggest to us that we must avoid it (we can’t!), eliminate it (in the 21st Century – I don’t think so!) or manage it (we don’t know how to). Because we don’t know what, when, why or how to do whatever it is that will help protect out health and wellbeing against stress, we generally don’t do anything. This is a disservice as doing nothing compounds and increases the problem of stress.
There are some relatively simple things we can do on a daily basis. These might not eliminate, reduce or avoid stress. They are ways of reducing the effects of stress.
Stress is not a disease. Stress is a symptom. Stress is defined as how the body or person reacts to the stressor, be it physical or emotional. We all experience stress in one form or another, whether it be positive stress or negative stress. Stress can take on the form of an emotional stress or a physical stress.
A Positive emotional stress could be getting married or giving birth. A negative emotional stressor could be losing a loved one or losing your job due to a dip in the economy. Amputation of a leg or being hurt in a severe car accident would be an example of a physical stressor.
Treatment for Stress
It is not always possible to remove yourself from the stress producing event right now. But you can put together a plan of action to remove yourself from the stressful environment: e.g. find a new job. Some stresses you can’t avoid; like giving birth, but you can support your body from the bad effects of stress.
Do the following on a daily basis to reduce stress in your life.
- Laugh a lot, by yourself and with other people.
- Go for a daily walk with the kids and/or dogs.
- Drink plenty of fresh water.
