What is edema (Oedema)? Treatment for Edema (Oedema)
What is Edema?
Edema is the retention of water in the body which traditionally accumulates in the feet and ankles. Other place’s the water accumulates is just under the knees on the shins and in the hands and face. Edema is fluid trapped in the body tissues. And can happen to anyone.
You will notice your doctor check for edema by pressing on your skin in the ankle area. The pressure on the skin will show a pitting, indicating edema. It is easy to do this test and you can perform it right now on yourself.
What is Edema – Causes
- Prolonged sitting or standing can cause edema. Movement is essential to pumping the fluids and blood from the legs to the trunk of the body.
- Defective valves in the leg veins, leading to varicose veins and a buildup of water/liquid in the feet and ankles.
- Diseases such as congestive heart failure, lung, kidney and liver problems as well as thyroid problems can cause edema.
- Pregnancy can cause edema. The added fluid volume that the mother’s body makes to sustain the fetus can cause pregnancy edema.
