What is Menopause?
Menopause is defined as the physiological cessation of menses (period) as a result of diminished and decreasing ovarian function. Menopause may be natural, artificial or premature. Menopause is diagnosed when menses (periods) have not occurred for a year.
Menopause is a natural process in the female body. Perimenopause, often referred to as pre menopause, which is the period in a woman’s life where changes in the menstrual cycle occur beginning the transition to menopause. The ageing of the ovaries lead to diminished hormone production causing the symptoms of menopause.
What is menopause - Signs & Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of menopause include: night sweats and hot flushes (Hot flashes), headaches, irregular periods, breast tenderness, hormone imbalance, mood swings, irritability, and vaginal dryness.
As the ovaries begin to age, their response to the pituitary produced hormones (FSH and LH) decreases. Initially producing shorter follicular phases which result in shorter cycles, decreased progesterone production, fewer ovulations and increased cycle irregularities. Eventually the follicle fails to respond and without the feedback of estrogen the circulating FSH and LH rise. The available and circulating estrogens and progesterone’s are remarkably reduced, but testosterone is decreased only slightly. This phase of transition begins before menopause (Perimenopause) and continues until after menopause.
