What is Diabetes, Hypoglycemic?

Diabetes is characterised by hyperglycemia (too much sugar in the blood).  Diabetes can have a genetic component and an acquired component due to bad life-style habits. It is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism in the body. The metabolism is the way in which our bodies use digested food as a means of energy and for growth.

The pancreas is the organ responsible for producing the hormones insulin and glycogen.   Insulin is a hypoglycemic hormone, which means it stimulates the uptake of glucose/sugar from the blood and uses it in the tissues as energy, or it stores it in the liver as glucagon for future use.  Glycogen is a hyperglycemic hormone, which means it stimulates the release of glucose into the blood to raise the blood sugar levels.

Diabetes can result from inadequate insulin (quantity or quality).  Either too little insulin is released or the insulin is not of a good quality, and cannot be used efficiently.

Type 2 Diabetes is often referred to as the late onset diabetes and is not dependent on insulin.  Type 2 diabetes is very often caused by being overweight and bad life-style habits (90% of cases).  The good news is that it can be treated through diet and exercise. Weight loss is always a health priority and many people have lost upto 10kg's in 4 weeks with Dr Mari's weight loss program.
